NEW POWER PROJECT
Time Saved By Helicopters "The Press" Special Servlet AUCKLAND, Aug. 2. Extensive use is being made of helicopters on the Tongariro power development, bringing large savings in time and effort. The machines are expensive, costing about £1 a minute for hire. The savings, however, balance the extra cost, according to the project public relations officer (Mr S. O. J. Murphy). He said the list of helicopter uses on the project was steadily growing, mainly because of the rugged nature of the area and difficulty of access. One recently delivered ready-mixed cement to a remote site on the headwaters of the Whakapapa river for casting a survey pedestal. About 12 trips were needed to ferry the concrete across half a mile of rough bush in cut-down 44-gallon drums. Another recent helicopter task was to make a botanical and ecological survey of the area to provide a blueprint for later restoration and regeneration of the work sites and their natural cover.
