Unbeaten Hornby Side Retains Tavendale Cup

Marist almost caused the biggest Rugby league upset of the year when it went down to Hornby, 3-2, in the sixth round of the Tavendale Cup series on Saturday. Hornby, three paints ahead with one round to play, has retained the cup with an unbeaten record. Addington ran wild to defeat Kaiapoi easily, and Linwood lost its fifth match when it went down to Papanui. The match between Christchurch and Sydenham was not played because of lack of facilities at Bradford Park. Results. — Hornby 3, Marist 2. Papanui 13, Linwood 3. Addington 31, Kaiapoi 5. Tavendale Cup points (with Christchurch and Sydenham one match behind) are.— Hornby 12, Papanui 9, Addington 9, Christchurch 6, Sydenham 4, Kaiapoi 4, Linwood 2, Marist 0. Marist Just Missed HORNBY 3: D. L. Houghton try. MARIST 2: J. Keremeta goal. Marist came close to causing the upset of the season against Hornby. Leading 2-0 at halftime after enjoying the advantage of a strong wind, Marist was given little chance to hold Hornby in. the second spell. However, a fortunate interception eight minutes from time allowed Hornby to take the lead. The match was played at a good rate, but tended to become scrappy as the ball became slippery. The Hornby forwards proved very troublesome and D. W. Moore and R. J. McKenzie did some fine work. D. A. Condick made one or two runs. However, the Marist cover-defence worked to greater effect than for some time. R. Anderson and W. .Middleton were the most prominent Marist forwards. Of the backs P. V. Smith and J. B. Kennedy ran dangerously and R. Nicholls was a nippy scrum-half. The soundest back was J. Worters, who stopped many Hornby attacks that had beaten the first line of defence. Referee: Mr A. Drake. Papanui Revels In Mud Bath PAPANUI 13: E. J. Tavendale. L. Newton, J. P. Hawthorne tries: Hawthorne two goals. LINWOOD 3: G. J. Rosanowskl try. The dreadful ground conditions did not deter Papanui from scoring three delightful second-halt tries in Its entertaining match against Linwood. The big Papanui forwards seemed to revel in the sludge and their progress was surprisingly swift. Linwood did not have the cohesion to contain Papanui. Tavendale was Papanui’s most enterprising forward on attack and his try, after a splendid

I mid-field break, was a highlight of the match. T. L. Bisman harried the Linwood backs with (superb tackling and strove manfully to open up play with sensible ball distribution. C. Schwass, at stand-off half, Hawthorne and the left wing, Newton, were the most incisive backs.

The second row forwards. Rosanowski and M. Whittaker, foiled several Papanui attacks with good covering work. Rosanowski scored Linwood’s only points with a fine touchdown after a tigerish solo burst. W. J. Godfrey and W. D. Beri tried hard to stimulate Lin- | wood’s play and G. J. Abercrombie was an elusive centre. Referee: Mr P. Yaxley. Addington Runs Riot ADDINGTON 31: P. Searle <2), R. Wiki (2), A. Mcßeth, E. i Brown, P. Gallery tries; G. Teaho five goals. KAIAPOI 5: T. L. Isle try: J. M. Ruston goat. Addington went on another spree to score 23 points in the first half against Kaiapoi and seven tries in the match. The muddy conditions did not deter the backs and their handling was magnificent. Kaiapoi never really looked the likely winner after the first

few minutes, but never gave up and held Addington verv well in the second half. Kaiapoi was without its captain-coach. J. E Bond, for the first time and it lacked a leader in the forwards The plucky little hooker, J. Smith, was forced to leave the field with an injury. Wiki was the most dangerous back and scored two tries, one after a strong burst down the side-line before forcing under the posts. Of the forwards, Searle, A. McNaughtan and Me Beth played well, giving their backs many opportunities. Referee: Mr N. Taylor.
