ROSEHILL WIN
Trawlerman By Head (N.Z. Prest Association) SYDNEY. The New Zealand stayer. Trawlerman, opened his Australian account with a win in the Rosehill Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday. Trawlerman was left alone by the puntera after a succession of also rans since being brought across the Tasman two months ago, but now bookmakers have sliced his pre-post odds for the spring carnivals considerably. Trawlerman. a seven-year-old gelding by .Dogger Bank, has been nominated for the Sydney double of the Epsom and the Metropolitan Handicaps and for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The Rosehill Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, saw the New Zealand stayer well back in the field from the six-furlong peg to the half-mile. From there, he made up ground and was sixth into the home straight. Then, with a withering finishing burst, he got up at the post to beat Olympus, also a fast finisher, by a long bead.
Trawlerman yesterday carried 7-5. He has been handicapped at 7-7 for the two Melbourne races and has been given 7-6 for the Sydney double. Another New Zealand-bred runner to win at Roschlll was the two-year-old Pyramus, which won the Two-year-old Handicap by three lengths. Ridden by G. Moore, who won three of the seven races on the card, Pyramus went out as odds-on favourite.
He gave his backers some worrying moments and appeared to be making heavy weather of it midway through the seven furlongs, but once in the straight he had the field covered. A furlong from home Moore gave the gelding a few cuts with the whip. Pyramus took the hint and won comfortably.
