Badminton Trophy Narrowly Won

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LAUNCESTON, August 1. New Zealand won the Whyte Trophy for badminton by two games when the series against Australia ended in Launceston on Saturday night.

New Zealand went into the final night with a two-rubber lead but the Australian team won the final match and levelled the series at eight rubbers each. However, New Zealand, with 19 games to Australia's 17, won the trophy. A big factor in its win was the upset victory by D. B. Higgins over the Australian champion and team captain, K. Turner. Higgins defeated an out-of-form Turner in straight sets and showed he was a worthy replacement for the former New Zealand singles champion, J. Robson. Turner never got into the game as the New Zealander played copybook badminton and caught Turner out of position on many occasions. Good Doubles Win Mrs H. Robson teamed well with Mrs V. Gow to beat the top Australian pair, Mrs K. Nesbit and Mrs J. Teining in straight sets in the women’s doubles. This was a match of high standard with perfect placement and shuttle control.
