Russian Athletes Leading U.S.

(N.Z.P. A. ‘Reuter—Copyright) KIEV, August 1. Wyomia Tyus, the United States Olympic champion, improved the official world record when she clocked ll.lsec at Kiev on Saturday in a women’s 100 metres race.

Miss Tyus, competing in the ■ two-day match between the ; United States and the Soviet Union, shares the ratified record of 11.2 sec with her com- ■ patriot, Wilma Rudolph. Ewa Klobukowsko and Irena Kirszenstein, of Poland, both clocked ll.lsec in Prague earlier this month but the time has not yet been ratified. On an over-all basis, the Soviet Union led at the end of the first day by 87) points to 79j. Staggering Defeat The Americans suffered a staggering defeat when they failed to win the pole vault event for the first time in the seven-year history of the meeting. Associated Press reported. Both Americans, J. Penne! and J. Chase, failed to clear 16ft 3in. The event was won by G. Bliznetsov. N. Dutov set a strong pace and finished with a blistering sprint to win the 10,000 metre race from his teammate, L. Ivanov, in 28min 22.015ec. The Soviet clean sweep of the 10,000 metres was another big American disappointment of the early stages of the :

meet. G. Lindgren, last year’s surprise winner at Los Angeles, finished a distant third. The Olympic champion, W. Mills, had tonsilitis and did not run.

The American men’s 4 x 100 metres relay team was disqualified for a faulty changeover and the Soviet quartet won the event in 39.3 sec—a national record. It was the first time the Americans had ever lost the men’s relay to the Russians.
