Pedestrian Island Smashed By Car
The pedestrian traffic island in Riecarton road, near the corner of Rattray and Puriri streets, was demolished when it was struck by a car about 2.15 a.m. yesterday.
A passenger in the car, Harley Rolton, of 10 Somers place, was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital with head injuries. The vehicle was driven by George William Murray, of 5 Somers place.
This was about the sixth time the island had been struck by vehicles, the Riccarton Town Clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) said last evening. A similar island in Riecarton road, near Rimu street, had also been struck about six times.
The iron light standards on the island near Puriri street had been removed after the last accident, Mr Sarjeant said. No really serious injuries had been caused by the accidents before the weekend. Most of them occurred in the early hours of the morning.
Admitted To Hospital.—After two ears collided in Linwood avenue about 8.35 p.m. on Saturday Bernice McClusky, of 28 Wilfred street, was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital suffering from head injuries. Hit Parked Car.— A ear driven by Donald Leslie Sunborn, of 23 Norwood street, was badly damaged when it struck a parked ear in Gloucester street about 3 a.m yesterday. Mr Sunborn's vehicle had to be towed away He suffered a minor cut to the face. The parked car was owned by David Stuart, of 404 Gloucester street.
Head Injuries.—When two cars collided at the corner of New Brighton road and Bassett street about 6.45 p.m. on Saturday Juliet Manual, of 11 Gresford street, suffered head injuries. She was treated at the Christchurch Hospital. Can Badly Damaged.—Cars, driven bv William David Dutton, 26 Epsom road, and Ken neth Lome Maclaine, 361 Armagh street, were badly damaged when they collided at the comer of Cashel and Armagh streets about 5 p.m. on Saturday. No-one was injured
Struck By Car.—Patrick Keenan, of 41 Hands road, suffered a broken arm and head injuries when he was struck by a ear while standing by a parked car in Armagh street about 7.30 p.m on Saturday. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. The parked car and the car which hit it were badly damaged. The moving car was driven by lan Douglas Camp bell, of 139 Stanmore road. Woman Injured.—Pauline Field, of 5 Otara street, suffered head injuries when two cars collided at the comer of Moorhouse avenue and Colombo street about 12.5 a.m. yesterday. She was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Car Over Bank.—A ear driven by Robert Hale, of Little River, went over a hank and was extensively damaged after it collided with another car on the Christ-church-Akaroa main highway on Saturday afternoon. Mr Hale and his brother, Maurice Hale, also of Little River, suf fered minor injuries The driver of the other car, Violet Pearl Daniels, of 149 Waimea terrace, suffered facial injuries. Station shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday. A Lyttelton-Christ-church train had stopped at the station a few minutes before. Brian Clare, of the s.s. Waitaki, berthed at Lyttelton, was suffering from arm and leg injuries. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. Kenneth Walton, of 56 Brittan street, was treated at the Christchurch Hospital for le? injuries. It is not known how the men were injured. Head Lacerations.—Jeffrey Mexon, of 113 Cambridge terrace, suffered lacerations to the head when two cars col’ided at the corner of Clyde and Fendalton roads about 6.5 p.m. on Saturday. He was treated at the Christchurch Hospital.
Collision At Lights.—Two persons were injured in a collision at the Carlton Mill road lights about 1.40 a.m. on Saturday. John Healey, of 98 Rattray street, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital suffering from head injuries Charles Barron, of 3 Telford nlace, was treated at the Christchurch Hospital for facial lacerations.
Chest Injuries.—Raymond George Capill. of 446 Wilsons road, was treated at the Christchurch Hospital for chest injuries after a truck and a car collided at the comer of Lyttelton and Edinburgh streets about 12.30 pan. on Saturday Motor-cyclist Injured.—Head and leg Injuries were suffered by Michael Nottingham, of 5 Balgay street, when a motorcycle and a car collided at the comer of Carmen and Halswell Junction roads about 11.35 p.m. on Saturday. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. Ran Off Road.—A car containing four Australians ran off the road yesterday near the bottom of the eastern side of Porters Pass. It stopped with its rear end over a drop of about 70ft, Margaret Solly, of Perth, suffered head injuries and shock- She was taken to hospital by a passing motorist. There was ice on the road and the car skidded on a blind corner.
Selassie In Zambia.—Eknperor Haile Selassie, of Ethiopia, is on the last day of his four-day State visit to Zambia, during which he has had talks with President Kenneth Kaunde.—Lusaka. August 1.
