Compulsory Public Service
Sir, —Perhaps “Mother of Sons” is right. More disciollne certainly, but why must it be discipline in the extremely unfair manner as conscription for 20-year-olds most certainly is at present? Compare my case. Balloted and medically fit, I am enlisted for training. As a public servant niy pay is not made up. I lose about £l2O, 31 months’ training and experience, and am also affected for future promotion. Then as one of the many relatively law-abiding citizens, who has worked and saved hard, I see Icriits of my own age lounging the streets, many of whom will be lucky and miss the ballot. This state of affairs is one example of many cases which shake the younger generation’s faith in our elders and makes many of us ask, “Is our country really fair and free?”—Yours, etc., FOR ALL OR NONE.
