BIG BILL AND CABRIERE WIN DOUBLE AT LEVIN

‘The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Big BUI, from the Otaki stable of B. A. V. Preston, easily won the President’s Handicap at Levin yesterday, and a T.A.B. double, worth £lB2 Ils for £l, was completed when Cabriere narrowly heat the top-weight Dhuran in the Stewards’ Handicap. It was Big Bill’s first win since November last and also his first win for Preston. Last week the same stable had won the main race at Awapuni, the Manawatu Hunt Cup. Cabriere's last win was scored last season, at Feilding in March. Both winners, however, were fairly well backed; Big Bill because of his good race at Trentham, and Cabriere because he had, finished third to Master Defence and David Jeff on a bad track at his previous start. Big Bill lost a few supporters when he drew so wide for the President’s Handicap, but R. W. Taylor gradually worked him across and forward. Half a mile out he was making a sharp sprint which took him into the lead. He went clear and never looked Uke being caught. Three Kings and Capless both ran on strongly for second and third with only half a head between them. They formed two of the last bunch of four down the back and did well to get so close. Three Kings would have been even closer had he not tried to hang in the last furlong. It is unlikely, however, that he would have beaten the winner.

Alaska moved up wide from the three furlongs and was handy on the turn. He weakened a little, but was still a good fourth. Sparkling Maid, last along the back after rearing at the start, ran on for fifth.

The rest appeared to have their chances. The favourite, Colonial King, was eighth. His jockey, B. F. Andrews, told the judicial stewards that Colonial King, though handily placed till the half-mile, started to weaken and was showing a tendency to hang. Andrews said that the going experienced was a good deal different from the deep and heavy ground In which Colonial King had shown his good recent form. Co-leader In the Stewards’ Handicap Cabriere moved up to share the lead, wide out on the turn, and he battled it out with Rashid and Dhuran from the furlong. Cabriere won by a short neck from Dhuran, which made his run on the inner. Rashid weakened slightly to third, but it was a good showing, first-up in open class. . Pursuit, which appeared to

have every chance, but was not hitting out evenly on the bend, was fourth, just ahead of Smokey Bay. the leader in the middle stages. The favourite. David Jeff, which was last till the half-mile, finished strongly for sixth. The stayers. Sir Barton and Polo Prince, ran well for seventh and eighth. The weather was fine and mild, but the track was cutting out. On-eourse the totallsator handled £45,686 19s, a decrease of £6434 10s.
