To Attend Battle Of Britain Anniversary
A former Polish fighter pilot, who fought in the Battle of Britain, has left New Zealand to attend the twentyfifth anniversary of the battle in England during September He is Mr A. Glowacki, of the Department of Civil Aviation, who has been 11 years in New Zealand. Mr Glowacki may be the only representativ" of New Zealand attending the celebra tions. Mr Glowacki was in the Polish Air Force when the Second World War began. He served in the Royal Air Force for 14 years, and was a member of No. 501 (Fighter) Squadron during the Battle of Britain, serving at Hawkinge Northolt, and Biggin Hill. His squadron was part Of No. 11 Group, which was commanded by a New Zealander, Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park. x
During his service in the R.A.F. Mr Glowacki was awarded Poland’s highest decoration, the Virtuti Militari. He also won the Polish Cross of Valour with four bars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Distinguished Flying Medal. Mr Glowacki served in the R.N.Z.A.F. for four years as a gunnery instructor and retired in 1958 with the rank of flight lieutenant. He has been with the Department of Civil
Aviation for the last seven years, and is now operations officer for the Wellington region. His normal work is the inspection and checking of flying operations. He lectures on air safety precautions, and is also concerned with agricultural aviation and all light aircraft activities. In Britain he will discuss agricultural aviation at the Ministry of Aviation.
