The “Hello Ladies’’
“Red Cross women visitors are hailed as the Hello Ladies’ in Hong Kong hospitals,” said Mrs R. J. Brake, president of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society, when she addressed members and friends of the society at the twentyfifth birthday celebrations of the Cheviot sub-centre.
After describing Red Cross work she saw during her recent travels in the East, Mrs Brake stressed the need for concerted efforts of ail members in sending aid and relief to these countries where the need is so great, “The National Red Cross project for this year, to raise £14,000 for building a children’s ward onto the T.B. Sanitarium at Inchon, Korea, will
be filling an urgent need,” said Mrs Brake. The Junior Society members were thanked for their contributions of peggy squares and health kits, and Mrs Brake urged them to make and send more.
Tribute was paid to the foundation members present. Mrs M. Nell, the first president, and Mrs N. Walls, first secretary, spoke on the work of the Red Cross in Cheviot during the Second World War. Mrs Nell cut the birthday cake. On behalf of the Junior Red Cross, Wendy Honeybone thanked the sub-centre for including the juniors in the birthday celebrations. Visitors from Blenheim,Amur! and Christchurch were welcomed.
