Manapouri Power

Sir. —One of your correspondents asked if Manapouri power could be used for making nitrate fertilisers. That process was completely displaced by a newer method using ammonia. As far as my information goes, “heavy water” could be produced with electricity at the wholesale rates charged to power boards. The plant could be located in an alcove of the powerhouse or access road tunnel, and thus could be far underground. I do not know of any other industry which could have such good security against attack. —Yours, ete.. ARTHUR LUSH. July 26. 1965.
