73 Dismissed After ‘Wash Day’ Dispute

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 23. A section of the R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd.’s freezing works were closed today and 73 men were dismissed after a dispute concerning the washing of certain items of clothing.

A company official said the dispute had arisen over a demand by the freezing chamber hands to have certain items of clothing washed. “This request is a matter which affects all freezing hands and contravenes earlier understandings and privileges enjoyed by these men with their clothing,” he said. The company advised the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union that it would encourage the matter to be taken to a dispute meeting with all companies. “The men rejected this un-

derstood procedure for disputes and elected to take Wednesday off to do their own washing, advising the company that they would not return to work until their clothing was dry,” he said. "In view of this position, the company had no other alternative but to close the department and dismiss the men.”

The secretary of the union, Mr T. P. Jelly, said the union would not be in a position to make a statement until after a meeting of the men involved at the works on Monday morning.
