Landed “Dream” Modelling Job
One month after arriving in London, an unknown Sydney girl with no training as a mannequin has been given a top modelling job by Norman Hartnell, designer to the Royal Family. She is Caroline Styles, a blonde aged 21 and sft lOin tall, who will model for the Queen.
“I’d had no training when I arrived in London, but my mother kept urging me on,” Caroline Styles told a special correspondent of the Sydney “Sun” in London. “She was convinced I could do it. So I walked into Mr Hartnell’s salon and asked if I could be a model.” Mr Hartnell told the correspondent that he took one look at Miss Styles and sent her to a leading London model school for training.
Earlier this week she went to work, modelling Hartnell’s autumn and winter collection. As 30 photographers and fashion writers clustered around her, Hartnell personally helped Caroline over her “first show” nerves. He chatted to her, joked and made her laugh. “She was a great success,” he said. One of Hartnell’s assistants said: “She was magnificent. This girl has a great career ahead of her.”
Caroline’s fairytale success means that she will now go
to Buckingham Palace to model clothes for the Queen and Princess Margaret. She is one of only five models working full-time for Hartnell.
Hartnell’s salon is recognised as one of the world’s greatest prestige fashion houses.
After this week’s glittering preview of the Hartnell collection, Caroline said: “This has been my mother’s dream since I was a little girl. “My mother was convinced I could make it if only we came to London.”
Caroline and her parents live in a large white house overlooking the Parramata river at Henley. When Caroline and her mother went overseas they intended to stay away a year. Caroline is one of scores of Australian girls who have gone overseas to “make good” as models in recent years.
