Mistake Left Morgan 999

(From R. T. BRITTENDEN, N.Z P.A. Special Correspondent.) BELFAST, July 21. A sorry mistake cost the Auckland batsman, R. W. Morgan, the distinction of scoring 1000 runs on New Zealand’s tour of India, Pakistan and England.

When New Zealand set out after 32 runs needed to beat Ireland yesterday, Morgan opened the innings and was thus given the chance of scoring the 17 he needed for four figures. But when he had made 15 and the scores were tied, a public address system announcement was made to the effect that Morgan needed only one more run to complete his 1000. He hit the next ball into the covers and trotted through for a single. That ended the match and left Morgan with 999 runs for the tour. 10-Wicket Win Ireland had resumed at 86 for seven and was ail out for 117. New Zealand scored the 32 runs without loss of a wicket. Even if the standard of cricket in Scotland and lYeland is not high, it was some satisfaction to the touring New Zealand team to end its first-class matches with victories over these teams by wide margins. The New Zealand team will depart for Holland on Friday for a two-day match at Haarlem. After that it will fly from London to Bermuda for one-day and two-day matches and there will also be a oneday game at Los Angeles before the team returns on August 7.
