PURCHASE OF LAND
County Council Decision After rescinding its decision to find only £4OOO towards the cost of buying the Young estate land at Cashmere, the Heathcote County Council decided by four votes to three at its meeting last night to find up to £7OOO of the cost of buying the land and developing it as a recreational reserve. It was agreed to meet Cashmere residents and ask them to produce the £2OOO they have offered, or to make other arrangements to find the money The council’s "4000 decision was rescinded on *he motion of Cr. E. L. Tyndall, who then moved that the council find up to £7OOO, which would include a proportion of the £12,000 for the cost of the land, and meet levelling and grassing costs. Cr. Tyndall said that Cashmere residents had undertaken to find £2OOO. The Golden Kiwi lottery would find one-third of the purchase and development costs, or £4333. This left £6666 for the council to find. Cr. L. L. Smith, who seconded the motion, said that the council should show enterprise, as the playing areas were inadequate. “The cost is not coming from the ratepayers but from land subdivision money,” said Cr. Smith. Cashmere councillors and the chairman (Mr C. D. Le Comte) were authorised to meet the residents and ask for financial assurance.
