Japanese Ship For Antarctic

Japan’s new Antarctic observation ship Fuji will make its first voyage to the Antarctic in November. Launched recently, the 7760ton ship is the first Japanese vessel built to operate in the Antarctic. The Fuji, an icebreaker and transport ship, will carry about 400 tons of fuel, food and material for the re-establishment of Showa Base. The Fuji is 328 ft long and 72ft wide. It has a maximum speed of 17 knots, a cruising range of 15.000 miles, and can carry 235 men. Powered by an 11.900-horse-power diesel engine of the electric acceleration type, the Fuji can crush ice floes up to Bft 2in thick and force its way through floes up to 20ft thick. The engine may be controlled from four places in the vessel. Anti-rolling tanks also have been installed.
