Gaol Instead Of Borstal

A sentence o<f borstal training imposed on James Hemi Mason, aged 21, a workman, in the Maigtobraite’s Court at Christohurch on June 28 on charges of unlawfully taking a car and unlawfully inteferimg with a car was quashed and a term of six months’ imprisonment substituted by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday. Mr N. R. Morgan, for the Crown, said he was in no position to challenge the appeal as its related to borstal training. The sentence appeared to have been imposed in error. The accused was over the age of 21 at the time of the offences, and the Magistrate had no jurisdiction to send him to borstal.
