Flight At 3750 m.p.h. (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE (California), July 21. Air Force Major Robert Rushworth today pushed the Xl5 rocket plane to a speed of 3750 miles an hour, five times (he speed of sound, in a study of turbulent air noise.
Five special recording microphones were installed on the Xl5.
Data from the study will help predict possibe structural fatigue of the metal, scientists said.
The experimental rocket plane reached a maximum altitude of 104,000 ft during its U-minute flight today. Its rocket engine burned for 80 seconds after the Xl5 was dropped from beneath the wing of its 852 “mother” ship over the California desert.
