Teachers’ Salaries

Sir, —It is hard for the public to consider this question without having facts. Perhaps the Education Department could give, in a comment on this letter, details for A, B, and C, each with 20 years’ teaching experience, and married (wives have no income). A has M.A. with sec-ond-class honours, B has 8.A., and C has only a teacher’s certificate. Assume all teach in Christchurch schools and have reached the highest point of their salary scale that their respective qualifications permit. What would be the respective total salaries and allowances in each of the positions listed for A, B, and C? Ordinary teacher at a primary school, intermediate school, and secondary school. Head teacher at a primary school with a roll of 260, 460, and 560. Position (at a secondary school) of responsibility, A, B, C, and D.— Yours, etc., CURIOUS. July 19, 1965. [The District Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton) supplies the following salary details of A, B, and C respectively: Primary assistant, £1555; £1450; £1305. Intermediate assistant, £1555; £1450; £1305. Personal grading up to grade lIL £l6lO, £1505; £1365. Personal grading grade IV or V, £1810; £1720; £1555. Head teacher, primary, roll 260, £2010; £1895; £1810; roll 460, £2010; £1895; £1810; roll 560, £2215; £2215; £2215. Position responsibility A, £1895; £1810; £1720; B, £2010; £1895; £1810: C, £2310; £2010; £1895 D, £2190; £2070; £1950. Mr Hamilton said that in each case the salary includes £7O marriage allowance. In certain circumstances primary and intermediate assistants qualify for one extra salary step. These conditions were rather too involved to explain in this note, but would be available if “Curious” were to ring teachers’ division of this office.]
