LYTTELTON VANDALISM
Police Asked To Help Vandalism at the Lyttelton sports field is again causing the Lyttelton Borough Council concern. The borough gardener (Mr A. Cable) reported to the council that two more windows had been broken in the pavilion and that the bowl of the drinking fountain had been broken off. Cr. E. A. Camfield said that the council had already replaced a number of broken windows with metal grills. “It looks very much as if we will have to do the lot,” he said. Cr. G. C. Adams suggested I that the council erect notices i warning vandals that they would be prosecuted. “They would probably damage those, too,” said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). The chairman of the electricity committee (Cr. I. G. Henderson) said that a number of light fittings had been damaged by stones in the Corsair Bay district. His motion that the whole question of vandalism in the borough be referred to the police was carried. Staff Shortage.— The council’s electricity department is still short of staff and recent advertising has failed to attract any replies. “Perhaps we should advertise in the sporting magazines,” said Cr. Camfield. “There may be some yachtsmen or other sportsmen who would like to be by the sea.” Cr. Henderson said the committee was looking into the possibility of importing electricians from England. Grants.—The council made a grant of £4O to the Lyttelton Marine Band and one of £5 5s to the Lyttelton Free Kindergarten. Town Hall Fund.— The council reaffirmed its earlier decision to support the town hall project, but reserved the right to determine the amount of money it would contribute. Latin Success Four times in the last five years, an Avonside Girls' High School pupil had won the upper sixth form section of the Classical Association’s Latin-speaking contest, the headmistress (Miss P. Stevenson) reported to the monthly meeting of the School board of governors. On the fifth occasion (last year) an Avontide girl was runner-up.
