MR R. PHILPOT (N Z. Presx Anociation) LONDON, July 19 Robert Philpot, the 41-year-old New Zealand musician who conducted th“ “My Fair Lady” orchestra at Drury Lane for three years, died in London’s Middlesex Hospital this morning. He had been ill for a long time but nevertheless carried on conducting the Drury Lane show “Camelot” until a week ago.
Robert Philpot won his first music prize in a piano-playing competition in his native Auckland when he was 11. He came to London in 1951 on a New Zealand Government scholarship. Before he became a symphony orchestra conductor in Britain he once emptied his bank account to hire the London Symphony Orchestra for a day so that the people who mattered in music could see him work. He was married, with three daughters.
