Only Winning Favourite

A warm favourite, Saturnian justified public confidence in him by winning the Winter Hurdles at Trentham yesterday. He was the only favourite to win on a day of minor upsets.

Saturnian’s win was at only his second start in an open hurdles race. At his first start in this company he won the Lamton Hurdles on the third day of the meeting last Saturday. Saturnian was back early but joined in at the top of the straight. After a brief tussle with his stablemate, Bagush, Saturnian went well clear. However, he tired badly near the post and Bagush goi within a short neck of him. Royal Ransom, which was always handy, was a close third, with the other two runners, Harlech and Conspirator, well beaten. Saturnian has now had 32 starts this season for 10 wins and 11 placings. Bagush and Saturnian led over the first fence from Harlech, Royal Ransom and Con-

spirator in the Winter Hurdles. Harlech soon went clear and he led with a round to go by five lengths from Royal Ransom with three lengths to Conspirator, Saturnian and Bagush in line. At the five furlongs it was Harlech by two lengths from Royal Ransom with a length ito Bagush, three to Saturnian and four to Conspirator, which was weakening and was pulled up in the straight. Royal Ransom joined Harlech at the half-mile but on the turn it was Harlech by two lengths from Royal Ransom. Bagush and Saturnian in line. Bagush led at the two furlongs but at the furlong it was Saturnian by two lengths. He began to weaken but [gamely held off Bagush by a short neck. There was three- [ quarters of a length to Royal Ransom and two lengths to Harlech.
