Good Fight Guarantee

!Bu our Boxing Reporter)

Sammy Rush, ranked sixth in the contenders for the Australian professional bantam-weight title, will box Laurie Ny, of Christchurch, at Canterbury Court on July 29.

Mr A. Daley, the Sydney trainer-promoter, has guaranteed that Rush will put up a good fight against Ny, according to the Canterbury Boxing Association president and matchmaker (Mr E. G. Pocock). Mr Pocock wanted Teddy Rainbow, rated fifth Australian bantam-weight contender, as Ny’s opponent. Mr Daley replied that Rainbow was booked to fight in Australia on July 29. “Daley said that if Rush’s display was not satisfactory, he (Daley) would refuse to take any of the purse for Rush. I have never had a guarantee like that before." Mr Pocock said. Twice Knocked Out On March 27, last, Gilbert King knocked out Rush in five rounds at Newcastle. On April 10, King again knocked out Rush at Newcastle, in the seventh round on that occasion. Ny stopped King in four rounds at Canterbury Court on May 20, and King looking far from fit when he entered the ring, looked a sick man when the bout ended. “I refused to accept Rush when Mr Daley first offered his services. However, Mr Daley offered the guarantee and also said that Rush had improved since being beaten by King. He reckoned that Rush would suit Ny’s style and that it would be a good match. “Watching Carefully” “I wanted an opponent for Ny, and Ny wants a fight. 1 have accepted Rush, because I could not get anybody else. I shall be watching carefully

and if I am not satisfied I shall exercise the perogative of not paying out to Rush." Mr Pocock said last evening. The New Zealand Boxing Association rules, clause 69 (e), state any boxer can be disqualified by the referee “for not endeavouring to win the bout.” The offender shall be reported by the local association to the New Zealand Boxing Council. The council has the power to impose a fine not exceeding £5O on the offender and may suspend the offender for such a period as it thinks fit, and may, in addition, order the forfeiture to the local association of any prize due to the offender in respect of the bout. The Canterbury Boxing Association. after last week’s debacle at Canterbury Court, must be prepared to take steps against a boxer who “commits any offence, other than such an offence against the rules of boxing as aforesaid”—as provided by clause 69 (f), which contains the same penalties as 69 (e). Therefore, the Canterbury Boxing Association has ultimately, no need for Mr Daley’s guarantee about Rush’s performance against Ny.
