Board Refuses To Give Up Refrigerator Agency
The Ashburton Power and Gas Board has decided, by four votes to three, to retain the agency for a popular brand of refrigerators and
freezers manufactured by an Auckland firm, and not to surrender this franchise to Hay’s, Ltd., as requested by the manufacturing firm.
The matter had previously been discussed at a special board meeting last month, when the manufacturers had sought to transfer the agency to Hay’s, Ltd., together with an offer to the board of 5 per cent of the price of each unit sold by Hay’s, Ltd. Mr K. D. Mcllraiith said the board could take some credit for helping the manufacturers when they were first getting established. It would not be reasonable for the board to hand over this agency, for a small consideration, to a firm which would be Ms trading competitor. Mr J. Bell said the board would be talking a retrograde step in giving up the agency. Mr H. R: Wilkinson and Mr C. Hilgendarf spoke in favour of acceding to the request.
Mr W. C. Burton refrained from discussion or voting on the matter after a legal opinion had been read barring members who were electrical traders, from discussing board topics relating to its trading department because of a “pecuniary interest” in the matter.
