B.B.C. Looking For Retired Couple
(Special Correspondent N.Z.PA.) LONDON, July 20. A 8.8. C. producer is looking for a recentlyretired couple for a television documentary series. They should be finding it difficult to adjust themselves to their new lives.
The series of 10 programmes, “Forward to Retirement,” will be shown early next year. It will be based on the couple the 8.8. C. is now looking for but several others will be used if their experiences contribute towards the general picture of retirement problems. The eouple now sought by the producer, Miss Beryl Radley, will be filmed in their own home and will receive a fee for their appearance on television. Not Planned They will not be well off financially but reluctant to apply for national assistance. They will not have planned to any extent for their retirement. The man will have thought only of relaxing but will be now finding leisure pursuits too costly and feeling guilty
about idleness. The wife will be unable to get used to her husband being around the house. Miss Radley says: “We want them to help others like themselves who did not plan beyond their working days. We think many of their problems would not exist or would be reduced if there was an awareness of them at an early stage. “We are not concerned with the problem of old age but of active retirement. “It is comparatively easy to get in touch with people who have planned their retirement. We want those who have found themselves unprepared. “This thing hits them on the back of the head when the man is say, 64 years and 11 months, and he is doing a full-time job and suddenly he has nothing to do of the same nature.”
