No Knowledge Yet Of Escapes
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. Until all the Auckland prison rioters had been brought under control and a search made of the prison area it would not be known for certain whether any prisoners had escaped, the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said tonight.
Mr Hanan said a magisterial inquiry would be held as soon as possible. He said he was gravely concerned that prisoners had again succeeded in getting firearms. Mr Hanan said he was unable to say precisely what damage had occurred. “At first glance, there is considerable damage to grille doors, locks and bars, and the fire has destroyed the roof of nearly all the institution. “When it is possible, Ministry of Works’ officers will make an assessment of the damage and give an estimate of the cost of restoration.”
Mr Hanan said plains were being made for the removal of all prisoners from Mt. Eden to other institutions “if this became necessary.” He said it was already clear a substantial number would have to be moved, but whether all the prisoners were shifted would depend upon the extent of damage done during the riot. No single institution was large enough to take the present population of Mt. Eden. It would be necessary, therefore, to send the prisoners to a number of institutions. It was expected most would go to Waikeria, Wellington and Christchurch prisons. Prison officer* had already been sent to Auckland from other institutions to assist with escorting. A
