Positive Approach In Women’s Hockey

rpHE choice of the Canterbury K Cup women’s hockey team has been made before the annual representative fixtures, which have been used as trials in the past. This policy shows a positive approach as the team can now concentrate on combination.

In the past, players have been participating in these matches for the selectors’ benefit but now they can play as a unit This approach is carried into the rigorous

training programme. It is certain that this attitude will assist the team at the ournament. The choice of team shows that the selectors were looking for fast forwards with the ability to switch play quickly. All the chosen members are good goal scorers and if they can work up a

constructive mid-field policy they will be an effective unit Both right flank forwards, L. Rutledge and A. Giles, are elusive, fast dribblers, but the interpassing between them has not been up to expectations. However, with A. Ruston and J. Murray as the defence they might be able to impose a passing pattern on this flank. It would appear that a policy of playing the right wing would be profitable with players of such ability. The defence is a sound one and with the introduction of S. Comer into the team as a regular member it would be even stronger. It is a pleasant feature of this team that such a fine player has been brought back into the representative squad. No stronger combination of backs could be found in Canterbury than M. Bruhns and J. Murray and if their forwards can link with them it will be possible for attacks to be mounted from all parts of the field. The team is: B. Makinson, vice-captain (Digbys), J. Murray (Harewood), M. Bruhns (Carlton), D. Quinn (Digbys), S. Comer (Carlton), L. Watson (Harewood), A. Ruston (Aranui), J. Capstick (Hinemoa), A, Giles (Carlton), L. Rutledge (Harewood), V. Fleete (Digbys), H. Walker, captain (Rawhiti), B. Turbott (Digbys), J. Davies (Aranui).
