Selwyn Players Win Two Table Tennis Titles
Tne Selwyn club members v K Brightwell and Mrs T. May. won the men’s and women’s singles titles In the Canterbury closed table tennis championships. Brightwell gave an excellent display of controlled attack to beat N. B Radford in straight games. In the women’s final. Mrs May used every opportunitv to attack, but lacked consist ency and was extended to four games by a very determined Mrs M. J. Shadbolt. The top seeds. Brightwell ana H P. Holt, attacked throughout every match from the first round of the men’s doubles and won the title from the defensive Celtic pair, p J. iv es and F Jarman, who had upset the sec nnd seeds, Radford and M A Cox, tn the semi-finals. Although extended to four games. Mesdames May and Shadbolt were in complete control when they defeated Mrs Y Boulton and Miss E. Pullin in the final of the women’s doubles However, the winners received a surprise challenge from Mrs P. Purdon and Miss J. Goodchap when they were extended to five games during the semi finals. With two games each, and 4-11 down in the deciding game the third seeds, B E. Edward and Mrs Shadbolt, staged a remarkable recovery to win the final of the mixed doubles, 21-19 in the fifth from Brightwell and Mrs Boulton. Results: MEM'S SINGLES Quarter-finals.—N. B.
