Wrecked Bus Removed
(N.Z. Press Association! PALMERSTON NTH., July 18.
The tangled wreckage of the bus in which five women died on Friday when it plunged into a gully near Marton has been removed from the accident scene for inspection, said Sergeant L. E. Miles, of the Marton police yesterday.
He said that local vehicle inspectors made an inspection of the vehicle before workmen from the Rangitikei County Council, assisted by local persons, removed the wreckage. “I cannot say at this stage what actually happened to cause the accident,” he said. A further inspection, he said, would be carried out before a report was submitted to the police, which would probably be some time early this week.
Inquests The inquests on the deceased persons, he said, would be held in Palmerston North, but as yet no date had been fixed for the hearings. The condition of Mrs Bessie Weggery, aged 40, of George street. Levin, who is critically ill in Wanganui Hospital with head injuries is still serious. The other eight passengers and the bus driver, who are in the hospital, are said to be “fairly comfortable." All seven persons in the
i Palmerston North Hospital were stated today to be satisfactory. They are: Mrs Melva Grace Waite. Mrs Irene Dallenger,
I Mrs Kathleen McDonald, Mrs Florence Louise Hoare. Mrs Fredericka Cousins, Mrs Ida Joyce Petersen, Mrs Muriel Sinclair.
