Racial Violence In Bogalusa
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YTJRK, July 19. People of the town of Bogalusa, Louisiana, are prepared for further violence today after a shooting incident last night.
Several whites were shot at by four Negroes. The Negroes were later arrested and one was charged with attempted murder. Bogalusa has been the scene of several violent incidents involving Negroes ahd whites recently, including the killing of a Negro deputy sheriff. Many Negroes in town have joined an armed group called the Deacons of Defence and Justice. Civil rights leaders, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, have disowned the group, saying it may harm the movement. Racial tension flared elsewhere in the South yesterday In Tuskegee, Alabama, a bid to integrate the churches failed as three integrationists were injured in a melee outside a Methodist church. In Anniston, Alabama, police are seeking the killers of a Negro father of two, Willie Brewster, aged 38, who died . yesterday after being shot while driving along a lonely road on Thursday evening. Local residents have
offered a 30,000-dollar reward for the capture of the killers. In Greensboro, Alabama, two Negro churches were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. Negro pickets demanding equal job opportunities have promised to renew demonstrations in the town today. Seventeen demonstrators were treated by doctors last week after a clash with police outside a courthouse.
