Cycle Tour To Italian
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, July 15. Felice Gimondi, a 23-year-old Italian rider, in his first full professional season, yesterday won the Tour de France cycle race which ended in Paris. Gimondi underlined his victory by also winning the twenty-second and final stage of the 2595-mile race, the longest and most gruelling cycling event in the world. The final stage was a time trial from Versailles to Paris. Raymond Poulidor, of France, finished runner-up for the second year in succession, and Gianni Motta (Italy) was third. Gimondi’s over-all time was 116 hr 42min 6sec. Nominated.—Mr P. D. Brown, a member of the executive committee of the Canterbury Athletics Centre, has been nominated as South island member of the national selection panel for 1965-66. Report Denied. —The Australian, Jack Brabham, the former world champion racing driver, vesterday denied a report he was retiring from Grand Prix racing.
