Magistrate’s Court Driver Disqualified For Year And Fined £18

Brian Griffin, aged 20, a steel placer (Mr L. M. O’Reilly), was fined £l5 and disqualified from driving for 12 months by Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driying at a speed which might have been dangerous in Papanui road on •Tune 10. On a charge of not having a warrant of fitness he was fined £3.

Mr O’Reilly entered a plea of guilty to both charges. Griffin’s speed from Church lane to Clare road was checked at 52 miles an hour. Traffic Sergeant H. J. McMorran said. He passed through four T intersections and overtook four other vehicles travelling in the same direction. The road was wet though rain was not falling at the time. When stopped. Griffin said he “just let the car go,” and thought bis speed had been about 40 miles an hour. On this occasion he would impose the minimum term of disqualification, the Magistrate said. It was the second time Griffin had been disqualified, and if he were convicted again of a similar offence he stood an almost certain chance of having his licence cancelled for seven to 10 years.

DROVE BUS CARELESSLY Eric Charles Leach, aged 55, a bus driver (Mr N. D. Thomson), pleaded guilty to driving a Christchurch Transport Board bus carelessly in Worcester street on May 22. He was convicted and fined £lO.

The bus failed to straighten up after making a right-hand turn into Worcester street from Oxford terrace. Traffic Sergeant McMorran said. It crossed to the incorrect side of the street and collided with an oncoming taxi, which was extensively damaged. Passengers and drivers in the vehicles were not injured. Leach had explained that as he turned the corner the cash-box in the bus slid across the floor, and he was watching it to see whether money was being spilt. Mr Thomson said that Leach had been driving for 43 years, and for 18 years had been employed by the Transport Board. He had an extremely good record.

In view of the defendant's record and employment he would not deal with his licence, the Magistrate said. DISCHARGED Peter Alexander Smith, a panel-heater (Mr G. T. Mahon), was discharged without conviction when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified in Aidwins road on May 22. On a charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour on the same date, to which Smith pleaded guilty, he was fined £4. Mr Mahon said that Smith had been disqualified for three months, at Culverden on May 20. two days before the present offences. He had been disqualified for having an unlicensed vehicle, having no warrant of fitness, and having incorrect licence plates, which were offences for which Smith did not expect to be disqualified. There was no indication on the summonses that he was liable to disqualification. Smith was not at Culverden when he was disqualified, and was not notified of the cancellation until the following week. At the time of the offences on May 22, he was not a-ware of his disqualification, said Mr Mahon. TAXI-DRIVER FINED

Robert John Noster, aged 31, a taxi-driver (Mr M. J. Glue), pleaded guilty to exceeding 30 miles an hour in Worcester street on May 23. He was convicted and fined £B. The speed of Noster’s taxi

was cheacked at 40 miles an hour, at 1.5 a.m., Traffic Sergeant McMorran said. People were returning from dances and other entertainments at the time, Mr Glue said, and insufficient taxis were available. Pressure of work led Noster to break the speed limit. There seemed to have been quite a. marked improvement in Noster’s driving since his licence was cancelled in 1961, the Magistrate said. “The reason why I am not dealing with your licence is because you have shown this respect for the law.” FINED £5 Charged with failing to stop at the traffic light, at the intersection of Tuam street, Hagley avenue, Oxford terrace, and Riccarton avenue on May 14, Stephen Alton Uren, a farmer, pleaded not guilty and defended himself. He was convicted and fined £5. ADJOURNED Charged with careless use of a vehicle in Wainoni road on March 31 and failing to remove glass from the road on the same date, John Russell Barrett, aged 38, a foreman (Mr H. W. Thompson), pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned partly heard to today. DISQUALIFIED DRIVER Eric Alfred Christensen, aged 23, a social security beneficiary (Mr R. G. Blunt), pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified in Ham road on July 1. He was convicted and remanded to July 22 for sentence. REMANDED Leslie Roy Hawkins, aged 49, a barman, was remanded on bail to July 22 on a charge of driving under the influence of drink or drugs in High street on July 12.
