FINES PAID BY OWNERS

|Men Caught In i Opium Dens (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 13. There was evidence that someone was paying opium addicts’ fines—someone in the opium trade, said Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., today. He had convicted Yat Shing, aged 60, on a charge of being found without lawful excuse on premises used for opium smoking. Shing, who had pleaded guilty, was fined £l2 10s with costs’.

Since 1946, said the Magistrate, Shing had paid out nearly £llOO in fines. These men were derelict pensioners, yet they were able to pay their fines within 24 hours. Owners of opium dens and fan tan houses pay fines for men caught and convicted of offences on their premises, a policeman said later. “The den-owners look after their clients.
