Students Regret Vietnam Policy
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, July 11.
The Otago University Students’ Association has expressed regret at recent Government actions arising from the Vietnam war.
A meeting of the student council of the association passed the following motions: "That this council regrets the decision of the New Zealand Government to send combat troops to Vietnam rather than adopt some other course of action more in the interests of both the Vietnamese and New Zealand peoples, such as: “(1) Offering the services of New Zealand in a mediating role in the dispute, either alone or as part of an internaitional effort.
“(2) Offering the services of New Zealand troops as
part of an international peacekeeping force. “(3) Offering New Zealand personnel in a non-combat-ant role auch as medical or engineering teams. “That tins council regrets the attitude of some Government members, who have made smearing attacks on those staff and students of the universities who have feit themselves bound in conscience to oppose the Government action.
“That this council regrets the .way in which the Government decision was made, particularly the fact that Parliament was presented with a fait accompli.”
