S.I Premiere
The South Island premiere of “After the Wedding,” by the New Zealand playwright, Campbell Caldwell, will be presented tomorrow by Phoenix Theatre.
Chosen from plays including those of Eugene O’Neill, Genet, and Thornton Wilder, "After the Wedding” will have a four-night season in Begg’s Theatre. Both “After the Wedding” and Caldwell’s first play, “Flowers Bloom in Summer,” were first presented by Wellington’s Unity Theatre and produced by Nola Millar. During the action, set in the living room of Joe Currie’s rehabilitation farm near Feilding, the audience discovers more and more about the state of Joe and Sylvy Currie's marriage. The process is precipitated by their daughter’s wedding and aided by the presence of those brought together for it. The play is a subtle blend of comedy ami tragedy with characters and situations drawn with remarkable insight
A casting problem was solved yesterday when twomonths old Tui Arthur was chosen for the important Act 1 rifle of Myra Kerr’s baby. Tui was chosen as the youngest of more than a dozen applicants who had seen a news item in “The Pless.”
