(From R. T. BRITTENDEN. N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent. > NORTHAMPTON. July 6. England’s new test selection, the towering J. D. F. Larter, staked claim to a place in the final eleven for Leeds by taking two wickets in his first few overs against New Zealand at Northampton today.
Although these were damaging blows. New Zealand responded with spirit during a partnership between Congdon and Reid in which the county’s slow bowlers were hit hard and often. This pair scored 63 together for the fourth wicket and Congdon was 62 at lunch when New Zealand had scored 112 for four. The weather was overcast and threatening when New Zealand began its innings. Andrew having declared at Saturday’s score of 282 for seven. Lartet soon had New Zealand reeling. Although he had a third man and a fine leg back defensively, from the first bald he looked very dangerous. He made the ball lift from almost full length, but he bowled Dowling with one which went through the gap between bat and pad and took the offfstump. A few minutes later one which lifted lobbed off the top of the blade of Jarvis’s bat and was easily caught by Milburn at short leg and New Zealand had lost its first two wickets for 15. Sinclair Caught barter came off after bowling five overs and It seemed things might be more comfortable for the batsmen, but P. J. Watts, who had opened at the other end and had looked fairly harmless, produced a lovely outswinger which defeated Sinclair’s defence and a straightforward slip catch was taken by the bowler's brother. The left-arm slow bowler, Scott, started without any really | deep fieldsmen and Congdon swept him vigorously for four, but a lofted off-drlve fell just short of a lumbering Larter at deep mld-off. A magnificent straight drive for four by Reid off Scott was the best stroke of the morning. He surpassed it a little later with one of the most extraordinary shots of his career. P. D. Watts bowled him one a little short of the length and Reid, from the back foot punched it to mld-wicket with a shortarm blow which sent the ball clean out of the ground. This was In the course of a fierce counter-attack by Reid and Congdon off P. W. Watts and Scott which brought 61 runs in 40 minutes. Then there was more leg-spin, this time from Mushtaq, and it was a rather tidier quality. And it was Mushtaq who broke this exciting and profitable partnership—with, of all things, a full toss which Reid skied to Larter at deep mid-off.
