DEFERRED PERMIT

Approach To Minister (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 5. The deferring of the permit to build the £63,200 grandstand at the Mount Smart stadium will be taken up with the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) by Mr H. Watt, M.P. Mr Watt Will request that the building programmer reconsider his decision to defer the permit for a year, on the basis that the Government considers the development of Mount Smart an urgent project, and that the Mount Smart Domain Board is sufficiently far advanced in its plans to warrant the application being approved. Mr Watt, who has been associated with the project from its start, said it appears the Government was prepared to give only lip service to its stated desire to encourage the development of sporting and recreation facilities in the country. The president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre (Mr R. Cheater) criticised the Government for allowing the building permit to be deferred. The centre would cater for 15,000 athletes—starting with children from the age of seven—and it would be greatly embarrassed if the project was deferred for a year, said Mr Cheater.
