351 DIE ON U.S. HOLIDAY ROADS

(N Z. Preu Auociation—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 5. Seven persons died near Loveland, Colorado, yesterday when their car skidded about 150 yards, smashed into a bridge, somersaulted, burst into flames, and crashed on to an underpass below.

It was one of the worst single road accidents in the United States during the Fourth of July holiday weekend which ends today. So far the U.S. holiday road toll stands at 351 deaths. A family of five were among those who perished in the Colorado smash. Three children, aged five, six and seven, were thrown from the wreckage and died immediately. Four adults were pinned in the wreckage and burned to death. The Colorado State patrol Mid the car skidded about 150 yards into a ditch, then slammed broadside into a bridge. The car was airborne for 84ft, caught fire and plunged between a twin overpass. It then skidded 19ft up a concrete abutment before finally coming to rest on its left side. Six people died, when their car was struck by a train near Sallisaw. Oklahoma, last night. The only survivor was a four-year-old girl who was rushed to hospital. Ohio led the nation with

28 deaths, followed by New York with 27 and California with 26. There were also 55 deaths by drowning and four killed in plane smashes.
