There are about 20m alcoholics in the world today—five million of them in the United States, according to one of tiie two men who founded Alcoholics Anonymous. The co-founder, still known publicly as “Bill W.” in line with A.A.’s rule of anonymity, was speaking at a rally in Toronto attended by about 10,000 reformed alcoholics and their families from 18 countries. “Bill W.,” now aged 70, got together with a surgeon in Akron, Ohio, in 1935, to help each other solve their drinking problems, and thus Alcoholics Anonymous came into being.
