WIMBLEDON “DOUBLE”

LONDON, July 4.
Australia’s 22-year-old tennis queen, Miss Margaret Smith, is back on her Wimbledon throne.
In the best women’s final at Wimbledon since the war, the Australian, who first won the title in 1963, edged home the narrowest of winners over the 1964 winner. Miss Maria Bueno, of Brazil.
Miss Smith won, 6-4, 7-5.
They provided a feast of scintillating tennis which held the Centre Court crowd spellbound.
Miss Smith’s victory, which followed the triumph on Friday in the men’s singles final of Roy Emerson, completed a unique Australian “double.” It is the first time in Wimbledon’s 88-year history both singles titles have gone to Australian players. Saturday’s match was even more absorbing than the duel on the same court a year ago, when Miss Bueno beat Miss Smith to win the title for the third time. It contained every stroke in the book from both girls. The outcome balanced almost on a razor edge, Miss Smith snatching victory by winning the few points which really mattered.
“Fred never got started,” was how Emerson summed up his 6-2, 64, 64 victory in 67 minutes over his countryman, Fred Stolle, in the men’s final.
Stolle never showed his true form, but it was doubtful if any player would have looked better against Emerson. It was an unexciting match, with Emerson in complete control. Stolle fought desperately in the second and third sets to get into the match, but Emerson’s brilliant form gave him no chance. The results of other finals (• denoting seeded players) were:—
Men’s Doubles.—J. Newcombe and A. Roche (Australia) beat R. Hewitt and K. Fletcher (Australia), 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Women’s Doubles. -Miss Bueno and Miss B. J. Moffitt (U.S.A.) beat Miss F. M. Durr and Miss J. Lelffrig (France). 6-2, 7-5.
