SEAMEN SHORT

Union Blames Company (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 4. A shortage of able seamen on the New Zealand coast was caused by the policy of the Union Steam Ship Company to pay off crews in the summer. the secretary of the Auckland Seamen’s Union (Mr T. Curphey) said yesterday. He was commenting on a report by a spokesman for the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation, who claimed New Zealand shipping companies were experiencing difficulty in finding sufficient qualified seamen. Mr Curphey said seamen who were paid off at Christmas could only afford to wait a week or two for new jobs at sea before seeking other employment.
