EARTHQUAKE REPORTED

Centred In Aleutians (N.Z.p.A. -Reuter—Copy rig ht) ANCHORAGE (Alaska), July 4. An earthquake described as “very severe” hit Umnak Island, far out in the Aleutians, on Friday, the Associated Press reported. Mrs Arthur Harris, wife of a former Aleutian Island legislator, said her husband telephoned that the earthquake was the worst shock he had experienced in 30 years on the island.

He had no report of any injuries. About 60 natives live in a nearby village and some 20 to 30 men are at a distant .early warning station on the island. The shock was recorded on the Coast and Geodetic Survey seismograph in Sitka, Alaska, as “moderately strong.” A tidal wave alert issued for the Hawaiian Islands following the earthquake was lifted after no ocean disturbance appeared at the wave’s appointed hour, according to a Honolulu message.
