ROUND-UP OF RUGBY
11-8 Win To Taranaki (N Z Press Association) After a late rally, the Ranfurly Shield holder, Taranaki, on Saturday beat North Auckland, 11-8. at Whangarei. Taranaki’s points came from tries by W. R. Coles and M. Wills, a conversion by K. P. Hurley, and a dropped goal by R. H. Brown. For North Auckland, D. R. Panther scored two tries, one of which was converted by E. J. Thompson.
King Country scored its second win by beating Thames Valley, 14-11, in a return match at Te Aroha.
For King Country, Parr and Peake scored tries. Parr kicked a penalty and a conversion, and Ingham kicked a penalty. For Thames Valley, Pascoe scored a try and Shaw kicked two penalties and a conversion
Hawke’s Bay beat Walrarapa, 33-0, in a return match at Napier. Hawke’s Bay had won the first match, 31-0. One of Hawke's Bay's stars was the former Transvaal winger, F. Duvenage, who scored three excellent tries. He was particularly fast and looked more impressive than the former All. Black, W. L. Davis
Tries for Hawke’s Bay were scored by Duvenage <3l, M. Loughlin (2), and K. Tremain. A. Small converted the six tries and kicked a penalty. In a relentless second-half onslaught. Bay of Plenty overwhelmed North Otago, 34-0, at Oamaru. The Bay team was superior and wore down a stout defence.
For Bay of of Plenty, tries were scored by Backhouse <4l, Stone and Cushamn, who also kicked two nenalties and converted five tries.
