July 5 TIMARU JETTY.—We are informed, on authority on which we can rely, that Captain Gibson, Port officer, Canterbury, has received instructions from the Government of that Province to make a survey and soundings, with a view to the erection at Timaru of a jetty 700 yards long, near the present landing place. He is also empowered to charter a schooner for his use while proceeding with operations to ascertain the nature of the bottom and its suitableness for screw piles, somewhat similar, we presume, to the experiments made here a short time since by Mr. Campbell,
under the direction of Mr. Balfour, marine engineer. Oamaru and Timaru have been for some time engaged in running a race to obtain that harbor accommodation which is so essential to the progress and prosperity of both, while it has been somewhat doubtful from time to time which of them was likely first to arrive at the goal. Let the Executive see to it; their promises are surely not all of the pie-crust order; they have pledged themselves as fully as honorable public men can do, to go on with the Oamaru jetty; are they or are they not to fulfil the pledge? We pause for a reply.—“Oamaru Times”.
