DEATH OF KAKAPO

Exact Cause Unknown (N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 2. The only kakapo in captivity in New Zealand has died. The exact nature of the infection which caused the bird's death is not yet known. The kakapo died two days ago. It had been held at Mount Bruce native bird reserve, near Masterton, for four years and a half. Mr J. V. Meech, Secretary of Internal Affairs, said today a post-mortem examination had been carried out at the Wallaceville animal research station. It appeared the bird had developed an infection, but its precise nature had not yet been determined.
