CATCHMENT AREA
Board Finds Favour It amazed him that there had been no opposition, said Mr A. T. Bell, when the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday discussed the recent meeting with county councils and Lyttelton borough to consider the proposed enlargement of the board’s district. Mr Bell said that the impression he had gained was that the counties were keen to get going. Mr D. R. Wilkie said he, too, had been impressed by the counties’ co-operation. They seemed generally to accept the fact that they wanted something done in quite a big way on river control and soil conservation. Their attitude would have been very different five years ago. The chairman (Mr R. M. D. Johnson) said that whatever areas were added, they must have representation.
The board decided to send a report of the meeting to the Soil Conservation Council and the Local Government Commission, with a covering note to the effect that reaction to the extension seemed to be favourable.
