New issues (with revisions) in Dent's “The Master Musicians” sferies include Marion M. Scott’s fine study of Beethoven; Professor J. A. Westrup’s critical review of the extensive and varied output of Henry Purcell, perhaps the most complete musician England has ever had: Percy M. Young’s account of the picturesque and varied life of Handel: and Eva and Sydney Grew’s presentation of the inspiration and achievement of Bach, “the musician’s musician.”
The contributors to the series have been carefully selected from established critics and writers who have specialised in a study of a particular composer, and the interest of both the professional musician and the intelligent amateur has been sought. Through the volumes examples of music are printed to illustrate points m the text. There , are good illustrations, and appendices in each volume give: (1) a calendar of events in the composer’s life, (2) a full list of works, (3) personalia, (4) bibliography.
