CONTAINERS FOR PETROL
Use Of Plastic Barred (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 2. Requests for plastic containers as receptacles for petrol have so far been declined approval by the chief inspector of explosives, says the annual report of the Internal Affairs Department. The report, tabled in Parliament today, says that in recent years the petroleum industry has been interested in using plastic containers for packaging its products. “However, because almost all plastics are adversely affected to some degree by heat or fire, plastic containers have not so far proved suitable,” says the report. “Certain plastic containers are, however, superior to metal cans in their ability to withstand rough usage,” it adds. The report says the eventual development of a plastic container is expected and it could be approved as a receptacle for petrol under conditions similar to those approved for kerosene. [A high-density polythene container has already been approved as a container for kerosene provided the filled container is not kept on commercial or industrial premises.]
