Daily Release Of Prison Inmates
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, July 2.
About 190 prisoners have been released from gaols from day to day to take employment in the community since the scheme was begun three years ago.
The Justice Department, in its annual report to Parliament, says the response of most of the prisoners has been “of a' high standard” It says there have been a few cases in which the conditions of release have been broken, but these have not been serious. “Inmates released under this scheme are required to pay £3 a week towards their
institutional upkeep and must refund to the Public Account amounts paid to their dependents by way of Social Security benefits. "The scheme, as well as helping the inmate to readjust to life in the community, gives him the opporunity of accumulating some funds to help re-establish himself when he leaves the institution.”
