Farm Labour Shortage
Sir,—Many farmers and friends of the farming industry will not be inspired by the statement of the Dominion president of Federated Farmers (“The Press.” July 1). Discussing the shortage of farm workers, he offers nothing better than, “It is difficult to know what corrective action can be taken.” He might find it helpful if he and the rest of the top brass of his organisation were to skip a few.of their meetings and use the time to do some worth-while reading. They could start with the paperbacks, “The Waste Makers” and “The Hidden Persuad-
ers,” both by Vance Packard, and follow these with “The Affluent Society,” by J. K. Galbraith. After that they should be able to see some of the things which confront them every day.—Yours, etc., E. R. HUDSON. July 2, 1965.
